I'm looking for something that can hold and let go of a taught string tied to a ~1lb weight that operates on 5v or 3v. Would a solenoid like this https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11015 be good for friction holding the string against a stationary plate? Or how about a stepper motor that could twist the string enough to stop it from moving and untwist enough to let it go? I'd like to hear other ideas if you have any.

Attach the string to a small metal loop (like a screw eye), and use a small solenoid with a pin to hold/release the loop.
