Using the UART on a RedBoard

Once I have uploaded a sketch to the RedBoard, is the UART available for general use? If the FT231XS doesn't tri-state those lines then I assume I can't use the UART for my project. And I understand I would need to isolate those signals from my hardware when sketches are being uploaded.

You're right that you'd need to isolate those lines while you are uploading a sketch. Once the sketch is uploaded, however, you are free to use the UART. The Serial Arduino function will let you do so.
