Yes, it makes fiscal sense to spend $10 to see if you can effectively solder SOIC before ordering $600 worth of PCBs and SOIC parts :-) Now I know I'm good with using SOIC parts but to stay away from SOT-23 and the like.

But soldering them to wires would be hell indeed..

BUT... Even if I do have to solder them all by hand, it's not really that difficult and the SOIC parts are almost always cheaper than DIP or other larger footprints.
