I love the venerable 0.1" header connectors, they're cheap and simple and flexible. But sometimes they're the biggest thing on a small board and I want something less bulky. What kinds of connectors do you use when you want a general purpose multi-pin connector that is small?

There are smaller versions of the 0.1" connectors, like 0.05" or 1.5mm or 1mm or 0.8mm. They seem like an obvious choice, but is there something better?

Flex connectors can be really small, but the flex "cable" can be hard to get and hard to work with and I gather the connectors wear out after not very many plug/unplug cycles.

And there are a bazillion proprietary high-density connectors that could be pressed into service but I quickly get lost in each company's twisty maze of offerings, all different.
