I need some breakaway female headers, and hoping someone can suggest a good source. SFE is out of stock, and, in any event, they aren't really breakaway, more like cut-apart. I'm looking for something that can take what a normal breadboard socket can take - a DIP IC pin, a wire, a male header pin, etc. I tried the swiss headers from SFE, and they are too small - a normal male header pin doesn't fit.

Does such a beast exist?

Female headers are generally not breakaway - only the male ones are. You can get them in 2-36 positions (single increments). Look for Sullins brand at Digikey.

I buy the longer ones and cut them to size.

You can't cleanly break them like you can some pin headers -but you typically can cut a long one to the size you want by sacrificing a pin.

SF will probably ban me for this, but o well.

alas you will wait at least 2 weeks to get them.

http://www.moderndevice.com is middle ground, try them (also US based).
