I've used one of the "new" Arduino Ethernet Shields (W5100 based, Sparkfun product DEV-09026) plus an Arduino Uno to put a server online. It has buttons to turn an LED on my Arduino on and off across the 'net, and a light sensor "watching" the LED, so you can see whether it reacts. (The light sensor's reading appears on the page served.)
