I'm trying to get a diffused cool white light that will illuminate a 8" diameter that is only 6" from the source light. what would you recommend? I will eventualy be running this off of a.c power so I'm also in the market for a means to do this.

It must be an LED ? A standard lightbulb won't suffice ?

You need an LED with a half-power viewing angle of (at least) 65 degrees. The "normal" LEDs SF sells are less than that and so won't illuminate the 8" diameter you want. This one does. Whether it's sufficiently bright is another question but I suspect it is. Drivers for that LED as well as mounting HW are available @ SF as well. Some sort of "wall wart" power supply should suffice, just find one with the proper current capability.

Another possibility is multiple "narrow angle" LEDs with a diffuser screen.
