Handwriting recognition hardware

Guys

Has anyone come across any handwriting recognition SDK, not PC based but rather MCU or DSP based which doesnt cost a bomb?

Alternatively I am thinking of hacking either a synaptic touch pad or PC tablet input device and hook it to a MCU? Any suggestions?
