AVR Studio hangs on GCC compile?

While compiling my source code (some USART library testing), AVR Studio is hanging. The project is a GCC project, but it's really AVR Studio that no longer responds ( to mouse clicks, etc). I'm certain this is a problem in my code, but it's nothing obvious like circular macro references or anything. What are other common causes of this type of behavior?
