I've been hunting high and low for days for basically a nice red or amber character LCD screen (or even blue) and cannot find anywhere to buy them. Mouser, Rapid, RS, Farnell, DigiKey, Active Robots, Cool Components, SF... I think RS have the odd blue back with white writing, which would do but are far from ideal, as I want a black background with colored writing.

Can anyone point me in a direction?

tB,

Do you have some way to display an extra 4 characters per line on these, or are you assuming the OP can be a bit more terse than he planned? I found the group of 16x2 units, as well as a 20x4 unit, but nothing 20x2 in SparkFun's offerings. It's not obvious whether one can run the 20x4 black on green unit in reverse image to produce a green on black display.

There's always color display modules, but I suspect the OP isn't looking to get that far into this application.

TIA,
Eric

From the better internet connection here at work, I did a google search for 20x2 amber on black lcd and turned up these:

Amber on Black:

Red on Black:
http://www.crystalfontz.com/product/CFAH2002Y-RDI-ET

Green on Black:
http://www.crystalfontz.com/product/CFAH2002Y-GDI-ET

Blue on Black:
http://www.crystalfontz.com/product/CFAH2002Y-PDI-ET

All of these are in the neighborhood of $35-40 each for a quantity of one. Standard quantity discounts are offered. Incidentally different colors are available only in certain sizes. It may pay to be flexible as to size or color options if you're working on a budget. CrystalFontz also has some really beautiful datasheets for their products, and they publish a real street address. (Something I look for in a company -- they post the address if they aren't afraid of irate customers showing up at the door)

The problem with the Mouser ones I forgot to mention are they are totally non-TTL compatible (CMOS) so cannot interface directly to 3.3V MCUs. Not a total killer and I can always fall back to those from Mouser if I find no others.

Yes the CrystalFontz site I found but that is well expensive for the units plus shipping to the UK would cost close to £40 per unit, when normal screens in other colours I have found for £7 :(

I was sort of hoping for more Red/Amber and dark backlight screens on the market with the character displays being so popular, but it seems to be only flooded with 16x2 or 20x2.

If SF would invest, GPEGInt can make them me on 250off units, but that is far more than I personally need, but I am sure SF could shift that easy.
