I'm experimenting with the uv-40 gps receiver, communicating just fine with it via a PIC serial line, just having problems getting a valid gps signal. (I have another type of gps receiver that is working fine here, so gps signal is receivable at my location). I'm using passive patch antenna, has anyone have success with this? do I need to go to an antenna with an LNA?

I would recommend any antenna with an amplifier (LNA). The passive antenna simple doesn't have enough to get a good signal unless you are in the best conditions.

As always, start with the best possible setup (powered antenna, antenna w/ LNA) - get it working, and then start to tweak things for performance/size/weight.
