esp8266 shield

soldered headers onto sparkfun esp8266 shield. connected to arduino. LED solid blue and red. upload the supplied shield demo. Result: "error talking to esp8266. Error: 0. Looping forever."
Is this a defective board? does it need to be re-flashed? (UART=sw) How can I troubleshoot?

"could be the way that the shield’s header pins are connected to the Arduino. Try to not jam the whole board into the Arduino"
