All things pertaining to wireless and RF links

Hello! I apologize if this has been asked before. I searched, but didn't find what I was looking for exactly.

I am trying to set up an energy intelligence system and would like to have multiple options from multiple vendors and am just looking for clarification on a few things. This is what I have figured out so far:

1. Networking protocol needs to be consistent (i.e. ZigBee won't work with other 802.15.4 derivatives etc).
2. Communications protocol needs to be consistent.
2a. A gateway that handles ZigBee using BACNet cannot handle ZigBee using some other communications protocol.
3. If I want to use different vendors that use different networking protocols I need a separate Gateway for each networking protocol
4. I would also need a separate gateway for any networking and communications protocol combination. (e.g. Zigbee/BACNet, Zigbee/Proprietary)

Are the above points correct or am I misunderstanding some of the interoperability of these systems?

Thanks for any guidance on the issue.
