A part that tight will more than likely require vias. I'd go with boards made overseas and use a stencil with a hotplate to assemble everything at your place. There are tons of tutorials out there on this process. I also make/sell stencils, but am also more than happy to contribute to help others ge...

cccool3, I'd take a look at microchips MCP1252 chips. You can get them in in 3.3V,5V and adj formats. I use this in my dataloggers all the time. You are limited to 120mA but they should work fine for this app. Otherwise I recommend the TPS6300X units.

I finally got around to cutting some cases for another project using the laser, t-slots with 4-40 hardware, and 1/4" acrylic. Overall its much sturdier than I thought it would be!

Keith, did you get this figured out? I have some code available for the GM862. Big thing was setting the right AT# BND mode and getting the carrier's phone number setting right.

swarga, I have been using t-mobile with good success. I am only using their $15 unlimited text option. I'd be interested to learn more about your database and how you are storing location information if you don't mind sharing.

I use just 4 simple commands to get a text message out:

AT#BND=1
AT+CSCA=+12063130004,145
AT+CMGF=1
AT+CMGS=40404

You should use this terminal program to help you get things up and running.

So I actually had some cases made by envision plastics and they turned out pretty well. They used a U-U design that snaps together very nicely. Pricing is not really hobby friendly but great for small production runs that I do.
