Re: Simple parts inventory program? (free or opensource)

What I would do if I had time to work on this: - Web-based app (AppEngine probably). - Wiki-like parts database with links to datasheets and references for all component distributors. Links to open hardware projects using the parts ("I want to check how people are using this"). - Each user creates a...

monochrome OLED display

Stumbled upon this OLED display that looks very crisp: http://uk.farnell.com/densitron/dd-12864we-1a/display-oled-128x64-white/dp/1498853?crosssellid=1498853&crosssell=true&in_merch=true& Would love to have something like this with an easy to use serial interface that could be use both for text orie...

I often find it to be useful to place a component, such as a SMT or a through-hole inductor or low value resistor to connect the split grounds. This way, one can use something as basic as a small inductor/chip bead or low ohmic resistor to tie the two grounds together for a simplistic, but adjustab...

Sorry for not being clear... When I meant "two ground planes" I meant "two large ground planes connected by a thin trace".

8 mil for standard trace width is on the small size, especially for an uncrowded and large board such as yours. I'd go no smaller than 10 mils. Split ground traces can be problematic. This is a good design manual for higher frequency digital combined with analog: http://www.sparkfun.com/datasheets/...

Advice on PCB layout

Hi all, I am relatively new to electronics and I think I have figured out the "making a functional PCB proto" part. Now, what I want to learn is "how to make the best possible PCB from a particular schematics". It's hard to find information about that - what are the best practices to minimize noise ...

Serial LCD is the easier to use -- if you are using the HW serial pins (0/1) for something else, it's still possible to communicate with the display through software serial. If you use a non-serial LCD, your options are: - to waste a lot of GPIO pins and be limited in what your device can do. - to p...

Thanks all, I'm glad to know I won't have to rework my design to 10 mil! I've just soldered a piece of wire on the pads at both ends of the damaged trace. Since this was to validate a proto and that I found flaws in the design, I won't need a replacement... I plan to release my project as a kit and ...

BatchPCB and 8 mil

The latest PCB proto I have received from BatchPCB has a broken trace (8 mil wide). I had ordered other boards before using 8 mil traces and had no problem. Is it an incident or is 8 mil not recommended with BatchPCB? I have always assumed that their suppliers did test the panels but this doesn't se...

Minimal digital/analog hybrid synth

Over the past months I have been designing a digital/analog hybrid MIDI synth based on an ATMega328p (digital oscillators using various synthesis algorithms, MIDI processing and "user interface") and a CEM analog chip (VCF and VCA). This was very fun as I had no prior background with microcontroller...

my original reply is flagged for my using a forbidden word (??) in short: - hardware UART used for critical stuff => must use software serial for LCD. - very critical stuff happening in pin state change/timer interrupts that does not tolerate a delay => must implement software serial in a non-blocki...

SerLCD baud rate control

Hi, I am having problems with the baud rate control of a 2x16 Serial LCD. The thing I don't understand: is the baud rate saved in eeprom, or should we send the baud rate control command (at 9600) at boot time every time the device is powered on? I looked at the firmware but I don't see anything rela...
