When you're done with $20-40K of test lab fees, and get type certified by the FCC, you can move on to more stringent regulatory domains like japan, France, and the EU.
If the item is for a geek market, sell it as a kit, needing a bit more assembly by the buyer, not an end item, and just include a disclaimer.
